Virtual Talk: Envisioning Landscapes - The Transformative Environments of OJB with James Burnett

Join James Burnett, FASLA, founding partner of OJB Landscape Architecture, as he shares selected projects from the firm’s first monograph, published by Monacelli. Winner of the 2020 National Design Award for Landscape Architecture from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian National Design Museum, OJB is known for work that affirms the public realm and its power to transform.

With compelling imagery, Jim Burnett will share how seminal projects from the firm’s practice have transformed their communities and continue to surprise and delight visitors. Featured projects include:

• Sunnylands Center and Garden: A cultural destination in Southern California that celebrates its arid setting and expresses the surprising vibrancy of the California desert ecosystem.
• Klyde Warren Park: Created over one of the busiest freeways in Dallas, this park has restored connections between city districts and established a new public-private partnership model for transforming cities.
• Hall Winery: A blend of modern and traditional, the project transforms an industrial wine-making campus of outdated Butler buildings into a welcoming garden oasis.
• Myriad Botanical Gardens: The renovation and expansion of this public park is part of a larger connected initiative to return open space to a revitalized, walkable downtown in Oklahoma City, OK.

The Fall 2021 Literary Series is presented by the newly established Frank and Anne Cabot Society for Planned Giving, in partnership with Phaidon and Monacelli.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
James Burnett, President and Partner | OJB Landscape Architecture

Jim Burnett, FASLA, is a leading voice in contemporary landscape practice through his writing, advocacy, and dedication to creating meaningful spaces that challenge the conventional boundaries of landscape architecture. After earning his bachelor of science degree in landscape architecture from Louisiana State University, Jim founded the Office of James Burnett in 1989 and has continued to lead the firm for more than 30 years. To date, OJB has garnered over 100 state and national design awards. Throughout his work, there has been a particularly strong focus on responsible place-making and the healing properties of landscape. Most recently, the work has focused on the transformation of American cities through the creation of active public spaces. Jim was appointed to the US Department of the State Industry Advisory Group in 2016 and is serving his second term as a respected design peer. He is a frequent speaker and invited critic on urban planning and landscape design of public parks and open spaces.

Jim is a Registered Landscape Architect in 26 US states and Canada. In 2004, Jim was elected to ASLA’s Council of Fellows, and, in 2016, was honored as the recipient of the prestigious ASLA Design Medal, an annual designation that is bestowed upon landscape architects for their ongoing commitment to the profession and an exemplary sustained body of work. Jim and the OJB practice are the 2020 National Design award recipients for Landscape Architecture from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian National Design Museum.
