Garden of Helen Bodian
Millerton, NY
Water feature, Meadow, Alpine/rock garden, Fruit/vegetables, Rare plants/plant collection
When a site opened for a large rock garden, Helen Bodian began a two-decade excursion into garden making, in the process satisfying an interest both in botanical diversity and in creating spaces with a welcoming ambience and interest for every season. One challenge at the outset was to find a way to display the plants she began collecting and propagating, yet at the same time have the arrangement agree with a sprawling, northeast landscape. The result is an informal overall scheme with paths cutting through fields, around a pond, up to forest trails and connecting four distinct gardens with each other: a large rock garden cut into a hillside next to the house; a romantic perennial garden squared off between hornbeam and mixed shrub hedges; a gravel garden adjacent to the greenhouse displaying a collection of tender salvias. Garden is partially accessible.
