Garden of Jane Garmey

West Cornwall, CT
Water feature, Scenic view, Organic/toxin-free, Garden structure/sculpture

An idiosyncratic garden designed by and belonging to garden writer Jane Garmey. (Her most recent book is City Green: The Public Gardens of New York.) The garden, which surrounds an 1827 house, has evolved gradually over the past eighteen years and is fronted by huge maple trees and enclosed by traditional stone walls. Its main features are a narrow water rill bordered by a high hornbeam hedge; two long beds, planted for drama and height with perennials, grasses, and annuals; an enclosed kitchen/picking garden intersected by brick paths; a terrace filled with container plants that opens to a formal boxwood gravel parterre; a symmetrical arrangement of weeping cherry trees; and a birdhouse village that floats above a glade of giant Petasites japonicus.
