Garden of Mr. & Mrs. Preston Haskell

Jacksonville, FL
The Haskell gardens comprise three acres of lush plantings, a contemporary house, and fourteen large abstract outdoor sculptures that are integrated into the landscape. The initial design for the riverfront property was created by landscape architect Wayne O. Manning, Jr., circa 1978. The landscape scheme for the property includes medium-density woods of live oaks and magnolias, with screening shrubbery including Viburnum, holly, Ligustrum, anise, and oleaster. The road to the west is screened by a tall multi-layered hedge with azaleas, Sago palms, and holly ferns planted in the foreground. Curving hedges of varying heights define spaces within the property and set off the outdoor sculpture. A lawn opens to St. Johns River on the east side of the estate. Other plantings include Aspidistra, Pittosporum, Podocarpus, and Ilex, while Jasmine covers an arbor and the fences around the tennis court. Groundcovers include Liriope, Juniper, and mondograss. Flowering annuals are added for color.
