I have been developing this one-acre property, which backs onto a lovely wood, for twenty-five years. A 100-year-old barn is backdrop for shade-loving plants, and on its sunny sides lie an herb garden and another perennial border. Ten graceful clematis vines climb beautifully designed lattice fencing, which defines the dwarf conifer collection. A woodland garden, my latest project, lies beneath a very large white oak and features a natural rock fountain. The first garden, with island perennial border, is now one among many.
Directions: From Garden State Parkway or New Jersey Turnpike/I-95, take I-78 west to Route 24 west. Take Chatham exit (immediately after Short Hills Mall). Follow signs to Route 124 West/Main Street and, at fifth traffic light, turn left onto Lafayette Avenue. Go all the way to top of hill and, when Lafayette bends to right, turn right onto Pine Street. Number 23 is the fourth house on left. From I-287, exit onto Route 24 East. Continue to The Mall at Short Hills exit. At end of exit ramp, turn right onto River Road. At first traffic light, bear right and continue straight (River Road becomes Watching Avenue) to fifth light. Turn left onto Lafayette Avenue. Proceed as directed above. Please park on street.
