Leslie & John Needham—River Hills
Bedford, NY
Meadow, Water feature, Fruit/vegetables, Organic/toxin-free, Scenic view, Substantial native plants, Woodland/shade garden
A lovingly restored 1790s Dutch Colonial house sits high on the property overlooking the Mianus River Gorge. All of the terraces and gardens have been designed to complement this full panoramic view. The property meanders on many levels with dining terraces, various gardens, and seating areas for savoring select views. Stone walls and steps lead from the higher perch through casual plantings, a fruit orchard, and a woodland walk. The gardens are intentionally designed in a loose style to blend the antique with the new and tie it all in with the larger pastoral setting.
River Hills is one of sixteen gardens featured in Larry Lederman’s book, Garden Portraits: Experiences of Natural Beauty, which is, in the words of garden historian Judith Tankard, “an exceptional personal record of some of America’s most important gardens now.”
