Malin+Goetz Garden
Hudson, NY
Meadow, Water feature, Alpine/rock garden, Garden structure/sculpture, Fruit/vegetables, Organic/toxin-free, Substantial native plants, Woodland/shade garden
Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz began a restoration project for their historic property near Hudson more than six years ago. Close to Olana, the property is surrounded by countryside protected through conservation easements. To achieve their garden dreams, they developed a master plan for their nearly nine acres of land with local landscape architect Jamie Purinton and master gardener Pam DeGeyter.
Taking cues from the regional landscape and their own collection of Hudson Valley buildings spanning four centuries, they have created gardens or outdoor rooms and living spaces to ground the structures and knit them together. While this is still a young garden, there is a walled herb garden, birdbath garden, and sunken cottage garden with a small frog pool. There is a vegetable garden, a berry garden, a rock garden (newly planted during Covid-19), a young orchard, and three separate meadowed areas filled with wild flowers. There is also a woodland waiting its turn.
While thoughtful about structure and development, the garden is intentionally asymmetrical, loose, and casual. It is meant to feel and appear as if it has expanded and grown over time. Self-seeding is highly encouraged, while care is given to have something in all areas in bloom for all growing seasons with structured plantings and hardscaping for winter interest. Most planting is native and hardy for this zone and the dry, rocky conditions of this “hot” property. It is a true pleasure garden in every sense, and one that happily consumes much of their time and energy when not in New York City.
