Mrs. Whaley's Garden

Charleston, SC
This simple frame Charleston single house was purchased by attorney Ben Scott Whaley and Emily Whaley in 1938. In 1942, Mrs. Whaley engaged Loutrel Briggs to design what has possibly become the most visited small garden in America. According to Mrs. Whaley in her book, Mrs. Whaley and her Charleston Garden (1997), the garden has a formal foreground with a natural romantic background. The predominate color of the garden in the summer and fall is green while winter and spring will be ablaze with a multitude of color. The garden is 110 feet long and is divided into several different garden rooms. Upon Mrs. Whaley's death in 1998, her youngest daughter Marty Whaley Adams, assumed ownership of both house and garden. Marty is an artist in her own right and has certainly put her brush strokes on the garden, making it her own.
