The Mawney-Harris House
Providence, RI
Organic/toxin-free, Woodland/shade garden, Fruit/vegetables
The garden at the Mawney-Harris House occupies a terraced hillside site adjacent to the late 18th-century house. It was developed starting in 1971 by the present owners from an overgrown former garden. The owners envisioned an enclosed and gated 18th-century parterre garden on the entrance level. Over the subsequent four decades, much of the plant material originally selected has had to be replaced due to storm damage or age.
At present, the entrance features cherry trees and a boxwood parterre. A terrace leads to the three upper gardens: a vegetable parterre, a perennial garden and lawn with a dining pergola and grape arbor, and a woodland area. A barn structure frames the woodland area, providing a garden shed and parking.
