Welcome to Winds Way! Located on the shore of Great Peconic Bay, our North Fork gardens occupy land that was once potato field and pasture. The gardens are designed to complement the historic buildings-an 1836 Greek Revival-style whaling captain's house, an 1872 one- room schoolhouse, an early-nineteenth- century barn-that we've moved to our property to create a compelling sense of place. Included are a small orchard featuring heirloom apples and espaliered fruit trees, a large-scale vegetable garden, a soft-fruit area, and herbaceous and shrub borders teaming with plants that appeal to butterflies and other pollinators. As avid birders, we've planted many natives to provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for feathered friends. Plantings vary in style from more formal gardens with historically appropriate plant material to naturalistic settings. They feature shaded and woodland gardens in addition to full-sun areas and a small meadow. All the gardens are connected with meandering paths; garden spaces are defined by picket fences, rail fences, and hedges. We started as weekend gardeners in the mid-1980s and, since retiring in 2001, continue to add new gardens to parts of our property that are not protected by conservation easements. Garden is partially accessible.
