Woodland Farms

Susan Richter’s gardens-in-progress at Woodland Farms have been evolving for seventeen years around an oak-and-stone dwelling built to suggest a medieval Anglo-Norman house mysteriously come to rest on 300 acres in Vermont. The “ruins” of ancient Celtic structures (created by Dan Snow) and substantial terraces, steps, and pathways (built by Scott Bolotin) provide the bones for a hands-on, owner-designed, richly varied landscape.

Distinct garden areas include forgotten shrubs and perennials, dwarf conifers, and uncommon trees. Featured are perennials that last spring through fall, looking fresh and interesting. Chickens are kept and there is an extensive drystone walled organic vegetable garden. Stone-and-timber outbuildings, large expanses of grassland, hayfields, berry bushes, grape and northern-kiwi arbors, and a young mixed-fruit orchard complete the design of this small manor farm.
