In 1966, photographer Eleanor Briggs bought her grandparents’ house from a developer. A 1778 farmhouse, the first in the town of Hancock, it inspired her to research Colonial gardens and plantings. This interest evolved over many years into an expanse of mixed borders and a bog pond, all while taking the wider surroundings of hayfields, forest, and distant hills into consideration. Recently, she added a pollinator garden to encourage biodiversity as well as beauty.

Today the gardens reflect a bit of Great Dixter’s style of lively combinations of color and texture and include an eclectic collection of sculptures, some by local artists and some collected on Briggs’s travels in Asia.

Ed Bowen and Taylor Johnston of issima nursery will also talk about some of the plants used in the garden and about the challenge of keeping gardeners supplied with exciting new material. They will be selling their plants all day.
