Digging Deeper: A Historic Landscape to Console and Inspire - SOLD OUT
Swan Point Cemetery
Sun, Jun 13, 2021
10:00 AM-11:30 AM
One of the country’s first garden cemeteries and a precursor of urban public parks, Swan Point was established in 1846. It is nestled between the Seekonk River and Blackstone Boulevard in Providence, creating a refuge of Arcadian peace and beauty acclaimed for the abundance of trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers, with horticultural facilities and greenhouses onsite. It has expanded almost fourfold from its original 60 acres and continues to make the most of its varying topography through thoughtful site work. In addition to the historical monuments and statuary, stone has played a significant role in the design and hardscaping of the picturesque grounds, including rock ponds, steps, and megaliths.
Swan Point’s director of horticulture, Kelly Perry, will lead a walking tour of the grounds, showing some of its treasures from the past and sharing insights about continuing on in the modern era.
This program is presented in partnership with the Providence Preservation Society and Providence Tourism Council.
