Digging Deeper: Challenges of Urban Gardens in Historic Settings

Landscape architect Mary Worrell will discuss the challenges of incorporating the desires of new owners in an already established garden of a much admired property in an urban, historic neighbor­hood. Topics to be addressed include spatial planning, incorporating vistas of the State Capitol building and sunsets, accommodating daily family life, respect­ing local historical preservation rules and guidelines, restoring contractor compacted tree roots and areas where geothermal pipe trenches were excavated, laying paths and terraces with appropriate drainage, and designing gates and other amenities. Starting with Worrell’s hand-drawn plans, her project resulted in a low maintenance garden that totally fits in the historic neighborhood. Horticulturist Angela Deller, who is responsible for the ongoing upkeep of the garden, will also discuss the plants featured in the formal boxwood and rose gardens and herbaceous borders.
