Interior designer Katie Ridder and her husband, architect Peter Pennoyer, had always wanted to build a country house in the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley. When they settled on their six-acre property in Millbrook, the couple sought to create a thoroughly contemporary home using Greek Revival design principles as a springboard. Katie’s challenge was to create gardens that reflect a strong relationship to the architecture of the home. Taking inspiration from great designers like the late Charles Platt, who was an artist first, then a landscape designer, and finally an architect, Ridder and Pennoyer’s gardens situate and anchor the home within the idyllic landscape, while providing a sense of formality and abundance. In their Digging Deeper, Katie and Peter will discuss their experience in creating a garden that feels in perfect harmony with their house.
