Wooded valley slopes, sparkling lakes, and glorious vistas prompted the founding of Tuxedo Park as a gated private residential club in the late 19th century. Access to the park will be granted to visit two gardens on the properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first house (above) inspired the design of Frank Lloyd Wright's own home and was moved downhill to a new location last century. Owner Scott Shaw will discuss a vertical garden he has created on the tracks of this steep slope. A recent expansion removed 60 years of overgrown vines and shrubs, revealing decades-old low stone walls and paths.
The second property is a restored estate garden overlooking the lake, incorporating a Palladian-style orangery ballroom and the ruins of a former mansion on either side of a restored 19th-century copy of the Fontana delle Tartarughe in Rome. By 1999, when the present owners purchased the property, none of the formal gardens of the original estate remained, but the substantial stone retaining walls, terracing, and general landscape structures were still intact. With the guidance of John Bierne and Kevin and Peggy Bost of Bost Horticultural Concepts, who will be leading the tour, the owners built their own garden design based upon the pre-existing parameters, continually expanding 'outside rooms' on the foundations of several earlier greenhouses serving as a lower terrace and formal boxwood parterre.
