Blackstone Boulevard Farm

Located behind and beside a circa 1911 house, the gardens at 290 and 310 Blackstone Boulevard are a renewing oases in a green Providence neighborhood known as the East Side. The kitchen of the house at number 290 looks out on a mossy scene that springs to life with the annual blooming of long-established rhododendrons. Sculptures by Rhode Island School of Design affiliates Howard Ben Tré, Jonathan Bonner, and Gilbert Franklin enhance the setting.

The side garden at number 310 is productive as well as ornamental. In a nod to the vegetable beds, fruit trees, hops trellis, and beehives within, it is known as Blackstone Boulevard Farm. Enter up the driveway, noting the twin granite steles marking the space. The owner commissioned stone carver Tracy Mahaffey to create these whimsical monuments denoting the entrance.

This is one of eight gardens on the Festival of Gardens tour presented by the Garden Conservancy in partnership with the Providence Preservation Society and the Providence Tourism Council.
