Several garden rooms in pastoral settings are defined and accented by stone walls, clipped yews, sweeping lawns with western views, and mature maples. The garden is dominated by a 125-year old copper beech, Ginkgo, and giant Metasequoia. The twenty acres showcase a sculpture by David Colbert, antique china, and stone statues. Notable is the conifer collection, surrounding the Hessian Rock, as it is called in local folklore, where the townspeople hid from the Hessian soldiers as they marched past during the Revolutionary War.

The colorful raised beds in the vegetable garden, grown organically, add whimsy to the design, which continues to reflect the original Olmsted plan. Espaliered pear trees and a peony collection enhance the entrance to the cutting garden. The hardscape, trees, and open meadows where Aberdeen Angus graze were inspired by Warren Manning and designed by Percival Gallagher and E.C. Whiting, Olmsted Associates, from 1929–1950.

When entering the Secret Garden, note the example of columnar trees including maples, Liquidambar, English oak, a weeping hornbeam, and Kousa dogwood. Stewartias punctuate the four quadrants filled with shrubs and perennials, including several natives. The Secret Garden, cutting garden, pergola, and summerhouse gardens feature lively bulb combinations in spring.
