Marshouse - Garden of Edwina von Gal
East Hampton, NY
Organic/toxin-free, Meadow, Woodland/shade garden, Water feature, Substantial native plants
Garden owner’s description: I am a landscape designer and environmental enthusiast; my goal is to create beautiful, peaceful gardens that support wildlife and do not depend on the use of chemicals: whole and healthy refuges. My garden is my place to experiment; to test ideas about growing native plants, creating habitat and managing biomass before I try them on my clients, or recommend them to others. This means there are always projects in process, some more successful than others, nothing quite camera ready.
The four-plus acres contain a variety of gardens in various stages of progress: meadows, meadow-like borders, a woodland, and a moss garden. I am now focusing on converting my gardens to more fully exemplify my new intiative Two Thirds for the Birds, i.e. at least two thirds native plants. www.234birds.org
About half the gardens are protected from deer and the other half are a good example of what little they don’t eat. I do not remove any biomass from the property, so I have explore ingenious ways to use it: log walls from invasive trees, hugelkultur piles, hay stacks of the meadow cuttings, plus lots of composting. The property leads out to a salt marsh and Accabonac Harbor. A small boardwalk leads out over the marsh and through a magical hummock.
GARDEN EXTRAS: Edwina von Gal will lead garden tours and answer questions about Two Thirds for the Birds, and toxin-free lawns and landscapes throughout the day. The PRFCT Handbook and PRFCT lawn signs will be available for purchase. PRFCT stickers are free.
