Garden of Bill Noble

Norwich, VT
Dry/xeriscape, Alpine/rock garden, Garden structure/sculpture, Fruit/vegetables, Organic/toxin-free, Rare plants/plant collection, Substantial native plants, Woodland/shade garden, Meadow, Scenic view

Originally a hillside farm with a rambling house, barns, stone walls, and fields, enhanced with views of neighboring farms and distant mountains, the garden has grown to include perennial and shrub borders, rock gardens, a vegetable garden, and orchard. The main flower garden began as an old-fashioned mixed border, inspired by the gardens of the nearby Cornish Artist’s Colony. Remnants of barn foundations offer settings for alpine and rock garden plants, ferns, and other specialty plants grown primarily for foliage value. Plantings have recently expanded with new shrub borders and meadow plantings featuring a variety of ornamental grasses, rhubarbs, and hydrangeas. The garden is chronicled in Spirit of Place: The Making of a New England Garden (Timber Press, May 2020).

GARDEN EXTRAS: Bill Noble’s new book on the garden, Spirit of Place: The Making of a New England Garden (Timber Press, 2020), will be for sale.
