Garden of Jim Goss & Joe Murray
Phoenicia, NY
Garden owners' description: Located in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, our modest house and grounds (just over one acre) serve as an example of what is attainable in deer country. What we may lack in time and other resources has been recouped with dedication. All design, installation, and maintenance is handled exclusively by ourselves, the owners. This woodland property is unfenced and almost entirely open to deer and other herbivores. As a result, resistance to browsers has been a primary focus over the garden’s 25-year history. Research, trial and error, and the occasional spritz of Deer Defeat has resulted in a lush landscape that we are proud to share.
The site features a bog, mixed borders, a small gravel garden, and a wild garden. To these beds are added a number of seed-raised annuals and tender bulbs, which join the many out-of-the-ordinary deer-resistant perennials arranged in striking combinations. Throughout the garden, the plantings are punctuated with stone accents, both natural and in the form of carved, South Asian objects. Jim, a painter and the primary designer of the garden, relishes the prospect of working and reworking this horticultural canvas.
