Garden of Linda Marcucci
Elkins Park, PA
Water feature, Alpine/rock garden, Organic/toxin-free
This 1910 house sits atop a small hill and its diminutive garden (5,000 square feet) has been 23 years in the making. The front yard features a large Japanese maple tree shading a rock garden on the steep bank. The north side of the house includes a path lined with a collection of hydrangeas and hollies. Tree peonies and oak leaf hydrangeas thrive on the south side of the house. In the secluded backyard, a pond creates a serene oasis surrounded by mature evergreens, trees, shrubs, perennials and climbing roses. Numerous clematis vines wind through the roses and other supports.
The deck and bluestone patio form garden rooms with seating areas and containers filled with annuals, tropicals, and succulents. The last bit of grass was removed when the curb strip became a bed of pebbles where self-sowing plants are encouraged, including seeds from the neighbor’s 60-year-old dawn redwood.
