Old Barlow’s Carriage House and Garden

In the cottage garden of this classic carriage house, garden historian Julia Cencebaugh Kloth has put her knowledge into practice, combining her love of plants with an exuberantly layered aesthetic. Her fragrant plantings are a riot of color and abound with old-fashioned favorites. Clipped box balls march through at intervals, echoing the hedges in the formal garden beyond. The approach to the woodland walk is more loosely structured with naturalistic drifts of plantings. This reflects a move away from the formal design structure and toward a more sustainable, biodiverse and natural style of gardening.
