Prospect Gardens Westport dates back to 1874, when the current house was the original Victorian farmhouse for an onion farm that fronted Prospect Road and ran down to the current swampy Aspectuck Land Trust. Through a series of abutting property acquisitions over the past twenty years, the property is now a contiguous eight-acre arboretum-style garden and includes collections, gardens, open lawns, and winding pathways leading from one area to the next, allowing the visitor a three-dimensional experience of being "in" the gardens. Some of the property's key features include a Mediterranean graveled entry garden, two orchards, a stone-tiered vegetable garden, berry houses (blueberries, raspberries), a sunny perennial garden, a shady woodland walk, a conifer collection, numerous flowering shrub and grass borders, a Japanese-inspired meditation garden (all surrounding a tennis court), two pools, and an internationally renowned sculpture. The newest addition is the one-acre flowering meadow. Mature deciduous and evergreen trees create a sweeping canvas and provide a sense of scale, shape, and texture reflective of the owners' contemporary style and sense of design.
