The Blau Gardens
Westport, CT
Historic garden, Garden structure/sculpture, Water feature, Rare plants/plant collection, Woodland/shade garden
These two acres of formal and informal gardens were developed over 50 years by Barry Blau and include many mature specimens, especially rhododendron groves planted below towering oaks and surrounding a Mid-century Modern house. An allée of pollarded crab apples leads to a Neptune fountain circle surrounded by columnar Norway spruce. Bamboo groves form a backdrop to the Asian garden with a large Buddha, waterfalls, and stream with water lilies and water iris, and a grass garden. A sunken rose garden is framed by stone retaining walls with boxwood parterre and fountain pools. A folly of astilbe-filled terraced beds is surrounded by stone retaining walls and steps. Lilacs, roses, and lilies are in other areas. The house also includes front-entry sedum terraces, a roof deck with a commanding view of the gardens, and a skylit pool room and mezzanine filled with interior plants. Features incorporated throughout the garden include paths and walks, benches, ornamental gates, trellis, stone retaining walls, and sculptures. Urns and planters filled with annuals punctuate the gardens and have been graciously funded by Bartlett Connecticut Arborists office in Monroe, CT https://www.bartlett.com/locations/monroe-ct.cfm BARLETT LOGO (file under this garden's images) Garden is partially accessible.
