Garden of David & Janet Andrews
Cheshire, CT
Water feature, Woodland/shade garden, Garden structure/sculpture, Rare plants/plant collection
The focal point of this 0.67-acre corner lot is a rock-lined stream guarded by a massive weeping willow. A rich variety of perennials and annuals fill the stream’s valley with something in bloom from April through October. Plantings are designed to shrug off the raging torrent that comes after heavy rains. Beyond the stream, stone walls provide a backdrop for a classic border garden. A bluestone walk and a third level of plantings sit above the walls in front of a typical suburban Colonial home. All this creates a dramatic tableau from the 300-feet of street frontage. The striking view encourages many who pass by to stop and admire.
On the south side of the yard a stone path wanders between a mass of ferns and a raised rock garden. A long row of rhododendron creates the transition from the stream into the back area. They are fronted by azalea, hydrangea, hosta, and a large weeping cherry. Behind a small grass lawn, a Kousa dogwood sits beneath a canopy of tall hardwoods that provide the shade for a woodland area where a wide variety of perennials take turns showing off blooms. A series of river stone paths wind past numerous birdhouses and whimsical household items recycled to become planters and sculpture. A river stone path on the north side leads to the front after passing below a tall oak, twelve-feet high rhododendrons, a magnolia, and a small grove of grey birch. Together, they create shade for a garden featuring a variety of unusual hosta.
