Brian Stroffolino's HeartLand Farms and Sylvia Davatz's Garden

Hartland, VT
Brian's HeartLand Farms is a small, diversified farm dedicated to producing the highest quality grain, herb, and vegetable seeds, while also producing market vegetables, fruit, berries, and meat. Brian farms using permaculture design principles and sustainable agricultural practices. The farm is on a gentle southwest-facing slope, contoured with terraces and swales, and planted with fruit and nut trees. Additionally, he now sells open-pollinated seeds under Solstice Seeds, continuing the catalogue previously offered by Sylvia. The visit continues to Sylvia's garden, right next door, where she grows seed of rare and endangered vegetable varieties, and continues to collaborate with Brian on growing seed for the catalogue. Sylvia's garden also includes many permaculture features and pollinator-supporting perennial beds. Both gardeners work closely together and are in multiple ways related. It is recommended that you begin your visit at Brian's farm, then continue to Sylvia's.
Directions: From I-91 to Exit 9/Hartland/Windsor. Proceed north on Route 5 for 1 mile into Hartland Three Corners. Continue north on Route 5 for another 2.5 miles. As you approach the overpass you will see Gilson Road on left. Take Gilson Road for about 0.75 mile to #74 on right. This is Brian's HeartLand Farm, where the tour begins. After visiting Brian, go back to Gilson Road, turn right and continue to the very next driveway on the right, #106. There is a small field on the left as you turn into the drive. House and garden are at the top. The driveway is steep and relatively long. Brian and I will both have signs at the end of our drives to help you find us.
