Dragonfly Farm
Mequon, WI
Meadow, Water feature, Garden structure/sculpture, Fruit/vegetables, Organic/toxin-free, Woodland/shade garden
Garden owner's description: Dragonfly Farm is 15.5 acres in Mequon, about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee. We have been gardening on the property since 1998. During that time we have restored a 1.5-acre wetland, built a barn for our poultry, and created about two miles of walking trails to “destinations” on our property. Approximately 13.5 acres of our land is held in a conservation easement by the Ozaukee-Washington Land Trust in perpetuity. The “homestead footprint” and its gardens take up the other two acres.
Still a fairly young garden by many standards, the “bones” of our garden are in place and maturing nicely. You will find a berry and soft fruit garden, a cutting garden, a vegetable garden, and a small orchard near the barn. Our hens are free-range and kept for egg production. Other destinations are an oak grove, a grape arbor, an allée of chestnut crabapples, and two ponds where we treat/direct our sump water. We focus heavily on native selections and use them in both traditional design and in our meadows and wetland.
