The Stein Garden
River Hills, WI
Water feature, Scenic view, Woodland/shade garden
Perched on a rise overlooking a bend in the Milwaukee River sits a group of historic buildings—a Milwaukee County landmark—that was built in the 1920s for Walter S. Lindsay, a Scottish immigrant who found success in Milwaukee. The picturesque residence and outbuildings were inspired by historic European examples and feature detailed stonework, half-timbering, and dramatic slate roofs (including turrets).
Our hosts, only the second owners of this ten-acre property, have restored it to its full glory over the past 30 years, creating a park-like setting with sweeping lawns down to the river. Among the notable features are mature trees and shrubs, a rose garden, and a diverse woodland with a stream running toward the river.
