The Mary Kay and John Brennan Garden
East Hampton, NY
The deer roaming onto the Brennan property from the nearby nature preserve had become unmanageable. Gardening seemed impractical. But John Brennan had wanted to surprise his wife with a perennial garden. Curtis Eaves, an East Hampton landscape designer, suggested deer-resistant plantings of Russian sage and purple and white Buddleia near the south side terrace. The deer cooperated. The following year the Brennans installed deer fencing and planted 'Nikko Blue' hydrangeas next to old hedges that they wanted to keep for screening.
The couple became avid gardeners and removed overgrown shrubs and trees in the back corner, planted a curved bed of Vitex, Viburnum and a colorful array of peonies, Nepeta, daisies, Scabiosa, lilies, and seven-foot Rudebeckia, and created spots for reading and dining from May through October.
