The Sumacs

Washington, CT
Garden structure/sculpture, Meadow, Woodland/shade garden, Alpine/rock garden, Fruit/vegetables, Rare plants/plant collection, Substantial native plants

Set on nine sprawling acres, The Sumacs features a stately home designed by Ehrick Rossiter built in 1894. Rock outcroppings, specimen trees, boxwood hedges, and gardens surround the house. Within the gates, you will find a formal potager enclosed by a hedge of yews, a cutting garden, orchard, and perennial gardens that have an elegant nod to the classic English garden. The modern elements are brought to life with sculpture, a putting green, and a folly made of wood from the property. Walk through a hidden woodland trail that includes a continued array of specimen trees, shrubs, and shade-loving perennials. The landscape holds interest throughout the four seasons: spring brings an extensive bulb collection that transitions into a meadow under the apple trees, elaborate tropical planters on the terrace in the summer, and fall is ushered in with a colorful dahlia collection. Garden is partially accessible.
